The main difference between a normal role and a movie extra role is that movie extras have no real speaking line in the production. The main reason for the movie extras is to make the production look real.
To be an extra you don’t need to have a large skill set and most don’t need you to have a specific look. In most cases, the lens will be out of focus on the extras and will mainly be focused on the main actors and actresses.
Having access to famous Hollywood movie sets and learning how the industry works are some of the perks of movie extra jobs. Their are a lot of real big time actors that started out in movie extra jobs.
When you watch shows like ER or Greys Anatomy, you will see doctors, nurses, and police in the background of some scenes. The great thing is that these extra roles are always recurring, so there will always be movie extra jobs available.
An added benefit is that once a casting director, director, producer, or any one on the show notices you, they can easily make you an actor or actress. A established actor will never take an extra role, but an extra can always become an established actor.
